Clients in Toronto

We did not expand here. We started here.

Synmek was founded in Toronto in 2012 and run from the city for eleven years before we moved our headquarters to London. Toronto is not a market we expanded into. It is the market we started in, and a large part of our client base is still here.

  • Loblaws — Grocery retail
  • Sears — Department retail
  • Leo Burnett — Advertising
  • Royal LePage — Real estate
  • HGregoire — Automotive retail
  • MortgageOutlet.ca — Mortgage brokerage
  • WorldEx — Logistics
  • Wannes Law — Legal
  • CDI Computers — IT hardware

Also in Toronto: Kogneta, Terrastone Landscaping, MyLandscapers, AM Renovation, Markham Custom Flooring, Anoush, Chez Jordan, ShawarmaBox.

That list is deliberately unglamorous in places, and that is the point. We have shipped for national retail at Loblaws and Sears scale — for Sears we built an appliance selection, matching and comparison tool that walked customers from a vague need to a specific model, and although the retailer has since wound down in Canada the work stands as the kind of thing we are actually for — for a global advertising network in Leo Burnett, and for one of the largest real-estate brands in the country in Royal LePage — and in the same decade we built the booking site for a landscaping firm in Markham and an ordering flow for a shawarma shop. The enterprise work taught us to survive procurement, legacy systems and stakeholder chains. The owner-operator work taught us that most businesses do not need any of that, and charging them for it is how agencies lose their reputation.

The Toronto Market

What we have learned building here.

Toronto has two web markets that barely acknowledge each other. There is the downtown market — fintech, agencies, enterprise procurement, RFPs, and vendors priced accordingly. Then there is everything from Etobicoke to Markham to Scarborough: trades, clinics, brokerages, restaurants and family firms who need a site that generates calls and rarely get sold anything except a template. We have worked across both for over a decade, which mostly means we can tell quickly which one you are, and quote accordingly.

A word of warning specific to this city. Google routinely conflates London, Ontario with London, UK — we see it in our own search data every month. If your business serves the GTA, your site needs to say Ontario and Canada explicitly, in the copy and in the structured data. It is a small thing that quietly costs local businesses visibility.

Our History Here

Eleven years in one city.

Synmek began in Toronto in 2012 as a partnership. In 2016 it became a single-founder studio, and in 2023 we moved the headquarters to London as the client base became more international. Eleven years in one city changes how you work. You stop selling projects and start maintaining relationships, because in a market where everybody knows everybody, the cost of doing bad work is that you stop being recommended. Several of the clients on this page have been with us across two of those three eras, which is the only credential in this business we actually trust.

What we have actually learned in Toronto.

Three sectors we have built in repeatedly here, and what each one taught us about what works.

Real estate and mortgage

Royal LePage, MortgageOutlet.ca and a run of independent brokerages taught us that this sector lives on two things: lead capture that works on a phone, and listing or rate data that is never stale. The failure mode is always the same — a beautiful site with a contact form nobody completes and a feed that broke six months ago without anyone noticing. We build the integrations to fail loudly rather than silently, because a quiet failure in this sector costs deals for months before someone spots it.

Home services and trades

Terrastone Landscaping, MyLandscapers, AM Renovation and Markham Custom Flooring are the GTA businesses most badly served by the web industry. They are sold template sites with stock photography and no way to convert the traffic they do get. What actually works is unglamorous: fast mobile pages, real photographs of real completed work, service-area pages that name the suburbs, visible pricing guidance, and a quote form short enough that someone completes it standing in a driveway.

Hospitality

Anoush, Chez Jordan and ShawarmaBox all needed the same thing and none of them needed a redesign to get it. Menus that load instantly and are readable one-handed, ordering that does not bounce to a third-party page that looks nothing like the restaurant, and opening hours that are correct everywhere Google looks. Most restaurant sites fail on the third one alone, and it is the cheapest to fix.

The Fair Question

Why hire a London studio for Toronto work?

The obvious question is why a Toronto business would hire a studio headquartered in London. Three honest answers. First, most of these relationships predate the move — we did not win them remotely, we kept them. Second, the work itself is not location-dependent: a WooCommerce checkout or a WordPress migration is built the same way from either city, and the parts that genuinely need local knowledge are the parts you already have. Third, the time difference works in your favour more often than against it. Where we are genuinely worse than a local agency is anything needing someone physically present — a photo shoot, an in-person workshop, a boardroom. If that is central to your project, hire in Toronto, and we will tell you so on the first call rather than the fourth.

What it costs, and how the distance works.

Quoted and invoiced in CAD. Project work is a fixed price agreed before we start, so exchange-rate movement is our risk rather than a surprise on your invoice.

Day rate — CA$1,500

Our standard senior day rate, Our senior day rate for team augmentation and time-and-materials work. This is a market rate for Toronto, not a currency conversion of our London figure — set 25 July 2026 and fixed at quote.

Fixed-scope projects

Most work runs this way. We scope after a discovery call and give you a number before anything starts — no running meter, no change-order games for things that were obviously in scope.

Time zone — ET (UTC−5)

London is five hours ahead of Toronto, so our morning is your overnight — work lands before you start, and we overlap live from your 8am.

Questions we get from Toronto clients.

Our headquarters has been in London, UK since 2023. Before that the studio was run from Toronto for eleven years, and we still work with Canadian clients continuously — Loblaws, Royal LePage, HGregoire, MortgageOutlet.ca, Wannes Law and others. We would rather tell you that plainly than imply a local office we do not staff. If having someone physically in the room is a requirement for your project, we are the wrong choice and will say so on the first call.
London is five hours ahead of Toronto, which works better than people expect. Our working day starts while you are asleep, so overnight progress is genuinely overnight — you tend to find work waiting when you open your laptop. We overlap live from roughly 8am Eastern until early afternoon, which is enough for calls, reviews and anything urgent. Clients who have worked with us for years generally describe it as an advantage.
Yes. We quote and invoice Canadian clients in CAD. Our standard day rate for Canadian clients is CA$1,500 — a market rate for Toronto rather than a conversion of our London figure. Project work is quoted as a fixed price rather than an hourly estimate, so currency movement between quote and delivery is our problem rather than yours.
Historically: real estate and mortgage brokerages, home-services and trades firms, professional services, hospitality, logistics, and a handful of national retail and agency engagements. The common thread is not sector — it is that the website has to produce enquiries rather than just exist. If your site is primarily a brand statement with no commercial job to do, there are agencies better suited to that than us.
No, and the mix is deliberate. Alongside the national accounts we have built for landscaping firms in Markham, a flooring company, renovation contractors and independent restaurants. The enterprise work taught us to handle procurement, legacy systems and long stakeholder chains. The owner-operator work keeps us honest about the fact that most businesses do not need any of that. What we will not do is sell a small business an enterprise process and bill them for it.
Yes. Accessibility obligations under AODA apply to many Ontario organisations, and in practice the requirement — WCAG 2.0 Level AA — is close to what we build to by default, because accessibility is easier to design in than to retrofit. We also handle the practical Canadian details that trip up UK-built sites: bilingual content where it is needed, Canadian address and postcode formats, CAD pricing and tax display, and payment providers that actually settle to a Canadian bank.
Regularly, and it is often the sensible arrangement. We are comfortable being the specialist half of a team — taking the WordPress or platform work while your in-house people own the systems they already know. We document everything and hand over cleanly, because the alternative makes us a dependency, and dependencies get replaced.
